Carl is a quantitative marine ecologist interested in climate changes in the past, how much they can be used as a model for the future, as well as the structuring of biodiversity patterns, including by food webs. He has worked on modern marine intertidal and ancient marine ecological systems. In particular, he takes a spatio-temporal perspective to assess which ecological responses to climate change are general and which are contingent on particular circumstances.
